Mary (Almasy) Vehar

Mary Vehar, 92, of Strabane, passed away, Monday, July 17, 2017.

She was born September 26, 1924, in Canonsburg, a daughter of John and Anna Gresko Almasy.

She graduated with the first graduating class of Chartiers-Houston High School, in 1943. She was a member of SNPJ, lodge 138, and the Greek Catholic Union. She enjoyed women's bowling at the SNPJ and KSKJ lodges. She loved doing needlework and gardening. She was a devout member of St. Michael Byzantine Church, Canonsburg.

Prior to her retirement, she worked as a secretary for Washington County District Justice, Henry Mavrich for 25 years.

On October 7, 1950, she married Jacob V. Vehar, II, with whom she shared over 62 years of marriage, who passed away May 28, 2012.

Surviving are her sons, Jacob V. "Jack" Vehar,III and his wife Barbara, of Holbrook, Thomas V. Vehar, and his wife Tamme, of Chartiers Township, Timothy Vehar, of Strabane; sister, Nancy Almasy, of Canonsburg; seven grandchildren, Kristen Vehar, Josh Vehar, Ian Vehar, Jacob V. (Courtney) Vehar IV, Heather Vehar, Claire Vehar, Nicole Vehar; great-grandchildren, Cassidy Vehar and Ainsley Vehar; several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her companion, a west highland terrier, "Penny".

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Almasy, and Edward "DiDi" Almasy, sister, Matilda "Tillie" Debbis, and great grandchild, Keithian.

Friends will be received Thursday, 4-8pm, in the Sollon Funeral Home, Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director, 724-746-1000.

Panachida services will be held in the funeral home, Thursday at 4pm.

Departing prayers will be held in the funeral home, Friday at 9:30am, followed by Divine Liturgy at St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Canonsburg, at 10 am with Fr. Joseph Raptosh, officiating.

Interment will follow in forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
