Obituary

Marika (Maria) Livanos, 94, of Washington, died Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 8, 1927 in Chios, Greece, second oldest of four children to Nicholas and Polina (Madias) Kavouras.  She was raised and educated in the northern capital city of Thessaloniki, Greece where she worked as an accountant until her marriage and immigration to the United States in 1961.  She and her husband owned and operated the LaMode Restaurant in Philadelphia, PA until her husband’s death in 1974.  She was an active member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia and enjoyed many trips back to her homeland and excursions with her sisters and friends from Philadelphia.  In 1996 Marika moved to Washington, PA to live near her only child, and enjoyed the special prestige of being the Priest’s Mother at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Canonsburg, PA where she has been dearly loved.

Surviving are her brother Mattheos Kavouras, daughter-in-law, Dianthe Livanos, with whom she made her home, seven grandchildren; Kassiani (Fr. George) Callos, Micah (Zeina) Livanos, Evstolia (Griffin) Fahling, Seraphim Livanos (Athena Kalogeris-fiance), Mariam (Marios) Adamakis, Vikentios Livanos, Apollinaria Livanos and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband Leonidas Livanos, sisters Aikaterina Kavoura and Smaragtha Papadopoulou and son, Fr. George L. Livanos, Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne and Head Priest of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church.

Friends were received Tuesday February 8, 2022 at St. George Orthodox Church in Bridgeville.  Funeral services were held Wednesday February 9, 2022 at 11 am. officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh and many clergy, with internment following in the St. George Cemetery.  Arrangements were entrusted to Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services, Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor.  The family thanks the communities of St. George Orthodox Church and All Saints Orthodox Church for their support and kindly suggest memorial contributions be made to All Saints Iconography Fund, in Marika Livanos’ name.
