Maria Anthou Obituary

Maria (Sahinis) Anthou, 87, of Canonsburg, died Sunday February 14, 2021.  Maria was born on February 10, 1934 in the village of Ialysos on the island of Rodos in Greece.  She was the second of six children of Nicholas and Marietta Sahinis.   She married her loving husband, Sam E. Anthou, on August 31, 1958 in her village in Greece and then immigrated to the United States in 1958 as a newlywed.   After 43 years together, her beloved husband passed away on October 24, 2001.
A devoted wife and mother, Maria was an active member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church including volunteer activities at the annual Greek Festival, the Pan Rhodian Society, the Philoptochos Society, and other charitable church groups.  Maria was an avid reader who encouraged education and enjoyed current events.  She embraced the language and culture of the United States and was proud to become a naturalized US citizen.  A seamstress by training, Maria enjoyed fashion and brought her artistic talents to many creative endeavors including oil painting, gardening, knitting, and baking.  She loved to travel overseas with her husband and family including trips to Europe, Jerusalem, Constantinople, Egypt and other destinations.   She enjoyed annual summers in the village with her family, and ensured that her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren visited often.  When not traveling, her favorite destination was enjoying nature from her back porch.
Surviving are her daughter, Margaret (Angelo) Scopelianos of Skaneateles New York; her son Emmanuel S. Anthou (Kris Faust) of Canonsburg; her daughter Christine (John) Alex of Strongsville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, George (Angela) Scopelianos, Sam (Alexis) Scopelianos, Sophia Anthou, Ellie Anthou, Sam Anthou, George Alex, and Samantha Alex;  two great grandchildren, Margaret and Michael Scopelianos.  Also surviving are three siblings in Rodos, Mihalis Sahinis, Fedra Renesis, and Kiriaki Atsiknoudas. She was preceded in death by her two brothers Kostas Sahinis and Dimitris Sahinis.
Family and friends are welcome Wednesday, from 11am to 1pm, in the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 601 West McMurray Road, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, 15317. Funeral services will be held at 1pm in the church with Father George Athanasiou, officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg.
