John M. "Jack" Heidler, 98, of Washington, died Wednesday, March 9, 2022.
Jack was born October 13, 1923, in Bridgeville, a son of Clayton and Mary Morrow Heidler. After the passing of his mother when Jack was 18 months old, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Esther and David Morrow, in a loving and caring Christian family. On April 12, 1946, he married his loving wife, Betty M. Custer Heidler, who survives after 76 years of marriage. During World War II, Jack proudly served his country in the US Army Air Force in the European Theater as a tail gunner in a B24 airplane. He flew 22 missions over Germany and France and two missions in the Normandy invasion. Jack worked as a finisher and electric wireman at Pennsylvania Transformer, McGraw Edison and Cooper Industries. Following his retirement, he worked for Bill Bogan Funeral Home for 15 years. Jack lived all of his life in Canonsburg and graduated from Canonsburg High School in 1941. He was a lifelong member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church (formerly Chartiers UP) where he served as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, youth leader and Cub Scout leader. Jack volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 30 years and Habitat for Humanity, and assisted with pastoral care at Canonsburg Hospital for 26 years. Jack is survived by his wife, Betty; his son, James Heidler of Cambridge, OH; his daughter, Susan (James) Schwartz of Sewickley; grandchildren: Rebecca Clemens, Katherine Hollwedel, and Glenn, Michael, Tina and Todd Mussman; great-grandchildren: Caylee, Alexandria, Chase, Brianna and Grayson; great great grandson Rowan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; aunt and uncle (David and Esther Morrow); three sisters: Margaret and Dorothy Heidler and Margaret Poyntz; and six brothers: Thomas, Herbert and Raymond Heidler and Frank, Robert and Harry Morrow. A Celebration of his Life, will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, 112 W. Pike Street, Canonsburg, PA 15317. Visitation will be from 10 am to 11 am. Services will be held at 11 am. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
