Edward "Big Ed" Schmidt Obituary

Edward C. "Big Ed" Schmidt, 85, of Canonsburg, died Wednesday, January 13, 2021.
He was born June 5, 1935, in Southview, a son of Louis and Helen Premba Schmidt. 
When his father died, he quit school to provide for his mother and his family.
Mr. Schmidt proudly served his country in the United States Army.  Ed was an avid football fan.  He played football with the Washington Generals and Merchants, and played semi-pro for the Pennsylvania Mustangs. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania sports Hall of Fame, Washington and Green County Chapter. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sitting outside and talking to people. He was a member of the Palanka sportsman's club, and the White Eagles in Canonsburg.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a steel fabricator for the PA Transformer and McGraw Edison.
On March 16, 1957, he married the love of his life, Ethel Jean Bowland Schmidt, who survives.  
Also surviving are his daughters, Kathy (John) Belleno, of Houston, Stacey Schmidt, of Oakdale, Edwina "Winnie" (Gabe) Vercher, of Marksville, Louisiana, and Mindy Fowler, of Uniontown; brothers, William Schmidt, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Robert (Lorraine) Schmidt, of Lexington, Kentucky; sister, Mary Hancock, of Claysville; 7 grandchildren, Jonathan Belleno, Sean Davis, Anthony Terry, Raymond Terry, Zackary (Elizabeth Brown) Schmidt, Jessie (Matt) Menhart, Samantha (Jeff Walden) Fowler; 9 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Michael Schmidt.
Friends will be received Monday, 1-4 pm at Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services, LTD, 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor, 724-746-1000. In the continued interest of public safety, everyone is required to wear facial coverings, and state regulations will be followed.
Services will be held Monday at 4 pm in the funeral home, with Pastor Frank Menhart, officiating..

Burial will be private in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville.
