Nicholas W. Baxter, 88, formerly of Christy Road, Eighty Four, died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in McMurray Hills Manor.

He was born March 31, 1929, in Fayette City, a son of James and Celia Pitelka Baxter.

He served during the occupation of Japan with Co. M 187th Para Glider Infantry, 11th Airborne Division, as a Corporal.

Nick attended Cecil and Canonsburg Schools, Harrisburg Community College, and Chambersburg Fire School.

He was employed by the Canonsburg Pottery during school years, Universal Cyclops Steel Company for 20 years, served as Deputy Sheriff of Washington County for 2 years, and worked as a safety inspector for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry for 20 years, retiring in 1991.

He served on the PA Executive Committee of the Democratic Party for 20 years, committeeman for three terms, and as a Constable for two terms in Canonsburg.

Mr. Baxter was a member of the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, the Knights of Pythias, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, post 191, the American Legion, post 902, the Lions, Eagles, Moose, Bears, and French Club, a life member of the National Council of Senior Citizens, an Honorary member of the United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CLO, PARSE, Steelworker Organization of Active Retirees, and Static Line Airborne Organization. He served as Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks lodge 846, and as the youngest exalted ruler at that time in the Southwest District. He was a Lifetime member of the Canonsburg Elks Lodge, #846.

On November 11, 1954, he married his wife Shirley Paraska Baxter, in the West Alexander Methodist Church, with whom he shared over 58 years of marriage, who died May 2, 2013.

Surviving are his daughters, Debra Huseman, and her husband Jeffrey Sr., of Houston, Carol Stage, and her husband, John Jr., of Ormond Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Jeffrey Huseman, Jr., of Canonsburg, Nicholas Stage, of Ormond Beach, FL., Erika Stage, of Ormond Beach, Fl., one great-grandchild, Shelby Huseman, of Canonsburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Paraska Baxter, who died, May 2, 2013, and his granddaughter, Leah Stage, who died, October 2, 2016.

Friends will be received on Sunday, 2-8 pm, at the Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services, LTD, 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor, J. David Sollon, director, 724-746-1000.

Services will be held 10 am, Monday, January 15, 2018, in the funeral home.

Interment will follow in the Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. The family kindly requests donations to the Washington Area Humane Society, in Mr. Baxter's name.
